Standing still burns up more calories than sitting down. Pretty soon, it might become fashionable to do housework around the house to burn up calories that any other form of useless exercise which burns up energy wastefully. Research had suggested that gentle exercise burns up an equal amount of calories as strenuous exercise at the gym. The enzymes in the blood vessels of muscles were stimulated to burn off energy when the person was standing. Sitting gave the opposite effect; the enzymes were inactive.

Professor Marc Hamilton, from the University of Missouri, recommended that as far as possible, all activities should be done standing upright. This would encourage the burning of calories far more effectively than taking the extra time to exercise at the gym.
