Trends: Risks of Botox.
Posted on April 5, 2008After years of use, the doctors were finally sounding the alarm on Botox. They said that the anti-wrinkle drug could travel from the face to the brain. Scientists who used Botox on rats discovered that the poison had reached the rats’ brains after 3 days.
Botox was derived from a toxin of the bacteria Clostridium botulinum. It poisons muscles in ways to smooth out the skin. The effects were temporary, lasting for about 3-4 months, Botox was known to cause side effects like headaches, stomach or flu problems.
Allergan, the company that makes Botox, said that the scientist’s research was not conclusive. The spokesman said that different preparations of botulinum reacted differently in different uses.
