The Things we Love, Bad For you: Flip-Flops

Posted on June 3, 2008

Remember that summer when you wore flip-flops every single day for about 100 days straight? Remember how gross they got? Remember how you didn’t care because this was the easiest, cheapest, most convenient footwear choice you’ve ever made?

Well, if you are still doing this: STOP…..

According to a story in USA Today, long-term wear of flips flops can cause myriad, sometimes severe toe, arch and heel ailments. Including:

  • Inflamed Achilles tendons and plantar fasciitis, inflammation of the connective tissue between the heel bone and the toes

  • Heel calluses
  • Hammer toes
  • Irritation between the toes which can lead to fungal infections.GROSS!

All of this is because the construction of these thongs offers little arch support and forces your foot to gripp abnormally/ heel-slapping gait.

The story also offers advice on the footwear you should be wearing (um, no ballet flats or wedges, I think that maybe more than half of my shoes)
